- Educational and Developmental Registrar, Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
Before becoming a psychologist Sophie worked in hospitality, justice, and education, and has had the privilege of working with all kinds of people in all different parts of the world. Sophie has studied across a wide variety of disciplines and interest areas and holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Psychology), a Bachelor of Laws, a Bachelor of Arts (Peace and Conflict Studies), and a Master of Psychology (Educational and Developmental).
Sophie’s professional training has emphasised understanding people’s developmental differences including how people of different ages and neurotypes (eg: autistic, ADHDer, AuDHDer, dyslexic) might have different needs and experiences. Sophie has a strong interest in the role that the autonomic nervous system, attachment, and developmental trauma play in the way we experience emotion in our adult relationships.
Sophie uses evidence-based approaches informed by attachment, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotion Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, biopsychology of the autonomic nervous system, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness. Sophie adapts to what a person needs, and takes feedback as you go on your level of comfortability. Sophie takes an anti-oppressive intersectional approach informed by my experiences in the justice and education sectors, and by the social model of disability.
Sophie engages in regular professional development to ensure their practice is neuro-affirming, with the goal of creating a safe, transparent, and effective therapeutic space for all clients. Sophie is passionate about adapting to your needs and making mental health support as accessible as possible, whatever accessibility may mean for you.
Sophie acknowledges that she lives and works on the unceded sovereign lands of Turrbal and Yaggera people and pays respects to elders and communities of past, present, and future by committing to decolonisation, antiracism, and reconciliation in personal and professional practice.
